Restore or Retreat and Ducks Unlimited are excited to announce the completion of the planting of the Port Fourchon Terracing and Living Shoreline Project in southern Lafourche Parish. The construction of the terraces was completed in the Fall of 2024 and Phases One and Two of the plantings took place in December of 2024 and April of 2025. The most recent planting was the third and final phase of this project.
This event was a volunteer-driven, large-scale vegetative planting event which was made possible with support from The Wisner Land Trust and the Greater New Orleans Foundation. Our volunteers planted approximately 7,000 black mangroves and 7,000 smoothcord grass, which will provide vegetative enhancement, increased biodiversity support and assist in critical sediment retention for the newly constructed terraces situated on The Louisiana Land and Exploration Company LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of ConocoPhillips, and Edward Wisner Trust lands.
The multi-day event required a large number of volunteers and we got them. Registration was open on October 10th and ran till the day of. This planting completed the vegetative planting of the terraces on this project. Volunteers were encouraged to register early due to space limitations and to join us for this special opportunity to work alongside the leaders in Conservation of our Wetlands. Ducks Unlimited and their efforts here in Louisiana are certainly appreciated by Restore or Retreat. This joint collaboration will benefit our wetlands for many years to come.
About the Port Fourchon Terracing and Living Shoreline Project:
This restoration project resulted in over 87,000 linear feet of earthen marsh terraces and over 4,000 linear feet of living shoreline, improving fish and wildlife habitat and protection of surrounding wetlands and critical infrastructure around Port Fourchon.
This project was made possible through the Ducks Unlimited/ConocoPhillips Louisiana partnership with support and collaboration with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Edward Wisner Trust, Lafourche Parish Government, Greater Lafourche Port Commission, LA Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), Chevron, Shell, Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP), US Fish and Wildlife Service, LA Department of Wildlife and Fisheries – LA Outdoors Forever, James M. Cox Foundation, and other Gulf Coast Initiative sponsors. Also, with additional support from Florida based clothing company MANGgear. These collaborations with our partners are how we will be successful in our restoration efforts.
Ducks Unlimited and Restore or Retreat wish to thank you the public for your continued support of our collective efforts to restore and protect our wetlands for future generations. We couldn’t have done it without you, our volunteers!
