Restore or Retreat invites you to join us in lower Leeville for the creation of our FIRST Oyster Reef Building event. We will Shell-abrate our coastal protection and resilience efforts by giving back to our wetlands.
— CANCELLED —
- What: Oyster Shell Reef Building Volunteer Event
- When: Saturday, October 4th, 2025 9am to 3pm
- Where: Old-LA-1 between Leeville & Fourchon, Louisiana (approx. 2 miles south of BBY-Marina and 2.5 miles north of Moran’s Marina)
Use this link for a pindrop to the meeting location 5RQ2+8FJ Grand Isle, Louisiana | Lat/Lon: 29.18834, -90.19886 - Age Restriction: You must be 18 years or older to participate
*Please note that everything you need for the event will be provided including hydration and lunch. Restore or Retreat volunteers are needed to placed bag oyster shells into the water to help the resiliency of our wetlands. These bags will become the foundation for a living oyster reef. Eventually these shells will have live oysters placed on them to facilitate the growth of the reef. We anticipate this to enhance and support fisheries biodiversity. The overall goal is multifaceted and will also work to address erosion control and sediment retention for the adjacent terraces in order to rebuild wetlands in an area that is suffering substantial land loss.
You will likely be getting into waist-high water and also potentially getting quite muddy. Bring towels and a change a clothes for afterwards.
If you are in need of more specific information please reach our project coordinator at Polly.Glover@Nicholls.edu
